On Wicked The Musical

Sometime in 2002, a very young dancer (me) was invited to audition for a new musical that my agent described as something like The Wizard of Oz.

By the last round of callbacks, I found myself in a windowless studio, what is now the Lyric Theatre, dancing with the absolute best dancers in New York City at that time. The choreographer was Wayne Cilento, alongside his assistant and muse, the phenomenal contemporary dancer Corinne McFadden (she was so cool). With a live drummer driving the room, we were jumping like monkeys, swirling around like mystical creatures, giving everything we had and completely drenched in sweat. By the time we ran the combination in groups, every dancer in the room was screaming and cheering each other on, not knowing we were inside something that would become its own phenomenon. It was Wicked.

I left that audition so full of inspiration and clarity: this was what I wanted to do with my life.

In 2004 I joined Wicked on Broadway—that was twenty-one years ago. Wow! Now that my nostalgia has reached legal drinking age (actually, the age I had when I joined the company), cheers to the show that gave me so much, Wicked. I guess I should get around to seeing those movies...

Final ON OFF Masterclass of 2025: Mattie Love

We are thrilled to welcome Mattie Love, superstar dancer and current Wicked Broadway cast member OFF AIR, to lead our last masterclass of the year.

Originally from Utah, Mattie is a 2023 Chita Rivera Award Winner for Outstanding Dancer in a Broadway show. Her credits include Madonna’s The Celebration Tour, Bob Fosse’s Dancin’ (onstage dance captain), Wicked, The Christmas Spectacular, Fosse/Verdon, GMA, and New Year’s Eve with Steve Harvey: Live from Times Square. She is also part of the Verdon Fosse Legacy.

Inspired by that original Wicked audition room, this two-hour session includes a full warm-up and dance with Mattie, where we’ll learn the current Wicked audition combination, assisted by me, giving you information you can actually use if you audition for the show.

We’ll end the session with a 20-minute Q&A about the show, the work, and Mattie’s career, from Broadway to touring with Madonna. And yes, I’ll chime in too, with stories from Wicked’s early days on Broadway.

Open to pre-professional and professional dancers at an intermediate to advanced level. Don’t miss this!
